                                                      Introduction

On 26th January, we will celebrate the 74 th  Republic day. On this day Constitution of Inda came into force after replacing the old prevailing Government of India Act (1935). India became a fully sovereign republic from this day. Before that, India was an autonomous Commonwealth country ruled by British monarchs.

The Indian Constituent Assembly adopted the Constitution on 26th November 1949, which came into effect on 26th January 1950.

Why  on 26th January

The Constitution was implemented because, on 26  January 1929, Purna Swaraj (Declaration of Indian independence ) was proclaimed.

Importance of the day

The independence came through the Indian Independence Act 1947(10& 11 Geo  6c 30 )-an  Act of the Parliament of the united kingdom.

When India became independent on 15th August 1947 as a constitutional monarchy with George VI as head of state and Earl Mountbatten as Governor-General, India was governed by ‘The Government of India Act 1935 as there was no permanent constitution.

After independence on 15th August 1947, on 29th August 1947, a resolution was moved for the appointment of a Drafting committee to draft a permanent Constitution. Accordingly, a drafting committee was constituted headed by  Dr.B.R Ambedkar. The committee prepared the ‘draft constitution’ and submitted it to the Constituent Assembly on 4th November 1947.

After many discussions and some modifications, the 308 members of the Constituent Assembly signed two handwritten copies of the document( one in Hindi and another in English) on 24th January 1950. After two days,i.e., on 26th January, the Constitution came into effect throughout the nation. However, adopting the Constitution took two years, eleven months, and eighteen days.

Dr. Rajendraaa Prasad was appointed as the first president of India, and the Constituent Assembly became the first Parliament of India under the transitional provision of the Constitution.

There are three national holidays in India-

1.    26th January Republic day

2.    15th August Independence day

3.     2nd  October Gandhi Jayanti

R   Republic day is celebrated in the whole country with zeal and enthusiasm. It is celebrated in the national capital, state capitals, District headquarters,  schools, colleges, and public places to honor the Constitution. All important buildings and sites are beautifully decorated.

In New Delhi, the celebration is held at the Rajpath before the President of India. The chief guest is the President of India, and the national salute is given to him, followed by the Indian National Anthem, Jana Gana Mana. Finally, the President of India hoists the national flag at India Gate and delivers a speech to glorify the country.

On the eve of Republic Day, the President of India distributes Padma Awards.

In-state capital governor of the state hoists the national flag.

In district headquarter, college, school, and any public place head of that institute hoists the national flag.

How is it concluded

“Beating the Retreat” denotes the end of the Republic Day festival. Therefore, after three days, i.e., on the evening of 29th January, “Beating the Retreat” is conducted.

The national flag is lowered at precisely 6 pm, and the National Anthem is sung to end the Republic Day celebration.
